A LOSING start to the friendly campaign in a very competitive game at Ladysmead.
The only goal of the game came from Saunders on the stroke of half-time.
The crowd was 562.
Torquay made eight substitutions at half-time and gave pretty much everyone a run-out.

THERE are no hangovers at Plainmoor, according to new winger Wayne Carlisle.
Ulster-born Carlisle, who joined us at the end of the season from some other outfit, says he has found none of the post-play-offs malaise he thought might be hanging around the Gulls squad, and instead reckons our brave boys will turn last season's disappointments into fuel for this season's fire.

According to today's reports, we are closing in on the signature of Michael Poke, probably on a season-long loan from Southampton.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper could even be a Gull again in time for the trip to Tiverton on Saturday.
Southampton are keen on the deal, apparently, but there are dots on is and crosses on ts to be completed.
Our man on the training ground with 10 Woodbines and a rolled-up copy of the Sporting Life says Roscoe Dsane and Mark Ellis sat out training yesterday with injuries, while triallists on show included Serb Nicola Nicolic and ex-Margate striker Lawrence Yiga.

GOING to Tiverton?
If so, you'll see at least one ex-Gull in the home squad.
Defender Matt Villis is an established member of the Ladysmead squad these days, and will be looking forward to the match against his former team-mates.
I thought he was in Busted, but I may have got the names mixed up.
Directions to this friendly mid-Devon club, culled from their own splendid website, are as follows:
Get to Junction 27 on the M5
Head towards Tiverton on the A361 dual carriageway travelling for about seven miles. Ignore the first junction for A396 Tiverton and Bickleigh (Gornhay Cross) and keep going (this is important) a little further until you reach a large roundabout.
Turn left, at the roundabout take first exit (A3126) for the Town Centre and Castle, continue along that road for about 400 yds crossing a new roundabout, passing a college, and the youth sections field on the left and Tiverton Rugby Club on right until you meet a mini roundabout. You will notice the Exe Valley Leisure Centre on your left.
Go straight across (first exit) the mini roundabout. You will see Ladysmead to your right
Go along that road for about 200 yds and turn right into Ladysmead.
There is car parking at the club (50p Charge). Don't worry if you find that the car park is full, stewards will direct you to alternative parking nearby. With matches where a large crowd is expected, look out for special road side signs that will direct you to nearby car parking.

SERB AND VOLLEY
Top of the triallists at the moment is Serbian-born winger Nicola Nicolic, who has been playing in the reserves at FC Basle in Switzerland.
Sources say he's a bit of a rocket, and he is likely to make an appearance in the friendly at Tiverton on Saturday afternoon.
The Gulls have also made a new off-field signing, with Fletcher Larkin taking the role of strength and conditioning coach, a job he also performs with the rugby players down at the Tics.
Transfer news in the BSP includes Oxford snapping up Shrewsbury's James Constable and Bristol Rovers' Lewis Haldane, who always looks good against us. He scored in the 3-3 reserves draw at Plainmoor back in February.
Curtis Osano from Reading, who was on loan at Rushden last season, has now made the move permanent.

Training continues apace for the 08/09 Gulls at Newton Racecourse today. All is going well, by all accounts.
Elsewhere in the BSP, promoted Lewes have signed ex-Argyle striker Scott Taylor. Taylor is 32, and scored 100 goals in the Football League in a career which also saw him banging them in for Blackpool.
He was in Dave Thomas' fantasy football team for a while, too. You don't get trivia like that anywhere else...
Happy Birthday to Simon Rayner today, by the way. He may have left Plainmoor, but he's still on my Gulls calendar so we'll wish him many happy returns!

The focus is on the new youth set-up today, with news that a brand-new pitch will be built for the youngsters at Newton Abbot Racecourse, and fans will be encouraged to come along and watch the young aces play in the Puma Youth Alliance.
The first competitive game on the new pitch will be against the youth team of Bristol Rovers on Saturday August 30.
It's a big step forward for the Gulls, who will also continue to build on links with Paignton Community College.
Among the seniors, expect news on the goalkeeper and left-wing positions in the next few days...
